Fashion and Feminism

Whore. Slut. Asking for it. Cheeky. Tease. Bore. Old Fashioned. Prude. Women are valued by the way that dress. Or at least thats what we are told. Showing too much skin, shes a whore and asking for it, why does she have the right to complain about getting attention from guys? Showing no skin, what a prude how does she think she’ll ever get a husband. There is a clear and strong correlation between Fashion and Feminism. In recent years women have reclaimed their bodies by wearing what society has deemed as “Slutty Clothing.” Womens bodies have always been claimed by men. Women have always been claimed by men. For thousands of years and in many parts of the world even today women are veiwed as mens.  A woman is just a mans property. An extention of a man. The way womens clothing is veiwed is heavily influenced by this idea. As something to only please men. Thats where the idea of being a whore, a slut, asking for it., being cheeky, a tease, a bore, old fashioned or a prude comes from. The clothing women wear is supposed to have a direct correlation to the way men veiw them. Its supposed to please men. Thats the idea. And it never can. A girl is shamed for claiming her body or for being afraid of it. The way she dresses is taunted and made fun of. Her skirt gets called too short or too long. Her actions are never veiwed as something she has done for herself, but rather something to please society and men. The idea of my body my choice expands way further than the importance of abortion rights. But a womens body, and what she chooses to do with it is her choice and is done to please herself. Not a man. So the way a woman dresses should not, doesnt and will never constitute a mans thoughts or actions. Fashion and Feminism have always been running on parrell lines. Historically, when women are viewed as people and not objects that is reflected in what they’re wearing, as it takes more of a “slutty” trope. But in historical periods where women are veiwed as less than, they often wear clothes that are less revealing to please a man. At times of feminist importance the way women are dressing is a direct effect. Look at the what women wore in the 20’s verus the 50’s versus the 70’s and then compare that to womens place in society at that point. There has always been a strong connection. Fashion and Feminsim, fashion is often veiwed as something that objectifies women but in actuality and in many ways fashion and feminsm are one in the same.
