I tried a capsule wardrobe for the summer

I was scrolling through youtube and I saw one of my favorite content creators Best Dressed tried a capsule wardrobe this past autumn and I wanted to try it out for myself. According to Lauren Conrad's website, a capsule wardrobe is defined as “The idea is that you limit the clothes in your closet to include around 25 high-quality, mix-and-match staples that make it easy to get dressed in the morning.” Some of the ‘science’ and reasoning behind a capsule wardrobe is reducing decision fatigue, which essentially is when the brain has difficulty making decisions due to the number of decisions it has had to make. An example of this is in the morning having to decide what to wear, what to eat, what workout to do can tire out the brain and make it harder to make more important decisions later in the day. Some say that this is why Steve Jobs wore the same thing every day. A capsule wardrobe reduces the number of items available in one's closet, and for all the items to match or coordinate, so picking out outfits in the morning is much more simple.

I decided to do a capsule wardrobe in summer because most of my style and style inspiration derives from autumn, and dark/light academia and so in summer I have some trouble picking out outfits and I thought simplifying my closet down to a small selection of high quality and matching pieces would make picking out summer outfits much easier.

Something that Ashley (Best Dressed) talked about in her video that I think is very important to mention here as well is that in a capsule wardrobe along with all forms of minimalism there comes the privilege of even being able to have too much stuff. If you decide to try out a capsule wardrobe or even just continue to read this post I urge you to be conscious of the fact that owning too much or even anything at all is such a privilege.

This is every single piece that was in my capsule wardrobe

Here are some of the top outfits I wore this summer!

I am now officially done with my capsule wardrobe, and honestly, I wasn't that big of a fan. I am not sure if it's because of the color palette I chose/ the fact that these are summer outfits and as I've said summer outfits aren't my thing, but in general I had some trouble picking out outfits that made me feel super stylish and confident. Also, this summer I have mostly just worn swimsuits and my outfit was something that was more of an afterthought, so maybe that has something to do with my distaste for my capsule wardrobe. My final thought is, a capsule wardrobe could work great for someone, and maybe it could work great for me. But this summer, it just wasn't my thing.
