Scared of Strong Women

“She is such a nasty woman” is a sentence that President Donald Trump seems to love a little too much. He can't seem to get enough of calling women who oppose him in any way Nasty.

I broke down what a nasty woman is in a previous Op-Ed titled: The Anatomy of a Nasty Woman. But essentially a nasty woman can be translated to a powerful woman. Any woman who defies society's stereotypes of what a woman should be is immediately brought into the category of nasty by Trump.

The distaste for powerful women comes from misogyny, which lives in everyone, whether we like it or not. Misogyny can be seen in two main ways: open and internalized. Trump's actions of calling women nasty, or any other open and clear hatred of women falls into the category of open misogyny. However, I believe internalized misogyny is the real problem at the moment. For, open misogyny is generally seen by the public as bad, of course, some people don't see issues with it, our president included, but for the most part, open misogyny is viewed as wrong. However internalized misogyny is what lives within all of us, thinking poorly of a woman for sleeping with more than a handful of men, or wearing little clothes is something that I know I have looked down on other women for, without even thinking about it, it's just ingrained in all of us, due to the media, television, movies, things we all hear those around us say. Recently I've worked on educating myself and making an effort to not judge women based off their embracing and openness regarding their sexuality, but still, the fact that I have to make an effort to unlearn and start to think that way is an issue, especially when men are applauded for doing the same things women are hated for.

This past week a video of Ben Shapiro reading WAP by Cardi B. and Megan Thee Stallion went viral. And although his reading is hysterical, the part of the video that occurs after he finishes singing the lyrics is what I think is most important. Shapiro proceeds to say, “This is what the feminist movement is all about, It's not about women being treated as equal, independent, full rounded human beings, it's about wet ass p-word.” The issue is, Shapiro seems to be missing the mark, the feminism I believe in, and I think most modern feminists do is about women being treated as equal human beings AND being able to embrace their sexualities, because that is what men have been doing for decades.

The whole reason I’m writing this article is because of Donald Trump calling Kamala Harris a “Nasty Woman” all because of her powerful and intelligent demeanor during the Kavanaugh trials. And while I agree with most Liberals/ Leftists saying that Harris is by no means the perfect choice, what I think we need to understand is that right now we can’t be asking for perfection, we need to focus on moving in the right direction, and we are STILL going from one of the most conservative to one of the most if not the most progressive ticket we have ever had. To close I would like to ask my readers to please VOTE this November (or should I say October.) Our basic human rights are on the line.
